What Are Boat Propellers?

If you want to have a longer engine life and better boat performance, then you need to have the right boat propeller. But you should know that there is no right boat propeller always. If you are planning to change your boat and boat engine, then you need to make some changes on the boat propellers as well. It will not only be the boat performance that will be affected by the use of the wrong boat propeller, but the engine of your boat will also be damaged quickly.

Every time you will be buying a boat and boat engine as a package, you will also receive the boat propeller as part of the pre-delivery rigging process. But it is important for you to verify the dealer about this. But there will be changes once you own the boat. The boat propeller will be chosen depending on the average load of the boat. But this important factor in choosing a boat propeller might be affected if you will add heavy items.

The boats that can withstand heavy loads are the pontoon boats and outboard-powered houseboats. Great changes in the altitude will be affecting the operating range of your boat engine. If your boat engine is made for sea level, you will need to have a different boat propeller for high-altitude operations in order to keep the engine revving in its normal range. As a matter of fact, you will need to re-prop for these changes.

The goal of changing some parts of the engine is to make sure that the engine will reach a certain rpm. The tolerance of the top speed of the boat engine will fall under the range of 800 – 1000 rpm.

There are some other boat propeller terms that you need to take note of in order to understand more about this topic.

Pitch – this is the theoretical distance that the boat propeller will move forward or backward in a whole revolution.

Diameter – this is the doubled straight line distance from the center of the hub to the tip of the blades of the boat propeller.

Cupping – this is the term that refers to the curl at the trailing edge of the blade of the boat propeller. This is used by engineers to increase the pitch of the boat propeller blades in order for it to have better grip on the water.

Slip – this is connected to the pitch. The distance that the boat propeller will be moving in one revolution will be affected by the fact that it will be losing some distance because of some slippage. The standard boat propeller will usually have 10 percent to 30 percent of slippage based on how it is used and how it was designed. Click here for more info.
